Background:

Founded in 1964 on the outskirts of Strabane, in more than six acres of grounds; has nursery unit, eight permanent classrooms, learning support room, reading-recovery room, large gym, library, and two computer suites. A voluntary playgroup operates daily; all playgrounds are marked with educational games; about two-thirds of pupils go on to local grammar schools. The curriculum includes French, sport and music. Extra-curricular activities include football, rugby, basketball, netball, hockey, cricket, badminton, and cycling proficiency. The school were winners of Strabane Netball League and the Strabane Netball Blitz. School trips to places of historical, cultural and environmental interest, including mainland Britain, are regular features. Parental involvement in learning is strongly encouraged. The school has an Education for Mutual Understanding programme, and works closely with Project Children, a US organisation promoting reconciliation between Catholic and Protestant children. The school won the BP Gulbenkian Silver Youth Award in 1997, it was a finalist in the Northern Ireland Community Cooperation Initiative 2002, and took part in innovative programme with BT to train staff, parents and pupils in use of ICT and internet. It is currently involved in the Dissolving Boundaries through Technology in Education initiative; piloting new managed service computer system for DENI's C2k learning-technology initiative.
