Background:
Founded in 1956 at Milltown House, former home of Cecil Frances Alexander, the hymn-writer; set in 23 acres of playing fields, gardens and woodland, a mile from town centre; Cavanalee River forms school's southern boundary. Non-denominational, accepting applications from all religious, non-religious and social groups; draws pupils from one of most socially-deprived areas of Europe. New technology suite (1994); sixth-form suite, art and design suite, and fitness suite recently refurbished. Cricket strong in relation to size of school: three pupils selected to play for Ulster and Ireland; one pupil has captained Ireland under-19 side and awarded MCC young cricketer's contract. Pupils won 1st XI Ulster Bank Schools Cup in 2000; finalists in 2001; semi-finalists in 2003. Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; also 40-member orchestra. 'The school works at providing a safe haven in the Northern Ireland situation. Pupils of both communities mix freely, socialise out of school and cooperate at all tasks.'; 'We enjoy the benefits of a disciplined, happy environment conducive to study and underpinned by a positive behaviour management programme in which all stakeholders have a say.'
