Omagh Academy was founded as a private school in 1903, originally based in a converted townhouse. It transferred to control of Tyrone County Education Committee and moved to small campus on the edge of Omagh in 1935. A redevelopment programme in 1991 created a new drama studio, a lecture theatre, a sports hall and a library. Teaching facilities include specialist areas for languages, science, technology, art and design, music, and home economics, along with a sixth-form centre. An extension in 2003 upgraded accommodation for expanding technology and ICT departments. Playing fields are off-site, but within walking distance. Rugby and hockey are major sports and pupils achieve county, provincial and national honours. The school maintains a close working relationship with other schools in the town, schools in the Republic of Ireland, and in mainland Europe. Over-subscribed, with 1.2 applications per place. Ethos: 'A caring, learning community in which relationships between teacher and teach, teacher and pupil, and pupil and pupil are based on courtesy, consideration, and mutual respect.' .
